Got this piece of information in a forward. Thought it was interesting.
One thing we had noticed is why people didnt get the real subtext and reason for the various roles and hence the title.
If you knew the real dasavatharams of Lord Vishnu and their characters you can appreciate the script more. Let me explain, starting with the best adapted role:
1. Krishna avatar – Vincent Poovaraghavan
Lord krishna is actually a dalit, he is dark-skinned [shyamalam]. He saved draupadi when she was being violated and he was the actual diplomat in mahabharatham. Lord krishna dies of an arrow striking his lower leg. Now look at how vincent was introduced.. he appears when asin is about to be molested and he saves her like draupadi. Vincent is the dalit diplomat, fights for land issue [soil issue to be exact] and dies from the metal rod striking his leg. Oh even five of vincent’s men are drugged at P. Vasu’s.. sounds familiar???
2. Balarama avatar – Balarama naidu
This is an easy given. as the name suggests and the role personifies you can easily get it.
3. Mathsya avatar – Ranagaraja nambi
nambi is thrown into water in an act of trying to save lord from being thrown into sea, though vainly. what more clue do you want?
4. Varaha avatar – Krishnaveni paatti
During the mukunda song, krishnaveni paatti does varaha avatar in the shadow puppetry. The frame freezes on it for a second. there is the clue. Moreover, in varaha avatar lord actually hides earth so as to protect life forms. Here too krishnaveni hides the germs – life form inside the statue so as to protect.
5. Vamana avatar – Kalifulla khan
remember in vamana avatar, lord vishnu takes the vishvaroopa, that is the giant form! Hence the giant kalifulla here symbolises vamana avatar.
6. Parasurama avatar – Christian Fletcher
Parasurama is actually on an angry killing spree and killed 21 generations of the particular kshatriya vamsa. Hence the real KILLER… Guess what thats what our Fletcher is! He comes around with the gun [modern upgrade for axe] and kills everyone around. I have to check if he kills 21 people though. :-D
7. Narasimha avatar – Shingen Narahashi
first of all the name itself is a play on the words singam [means lion in tamil] and narasimha [the avatar being symbolised]. Lord Narasimha manifests himelf to kill the bad guy and he also teaches prahaladha. In the movie, he shows up to kill the killer fletcher! and is also a teacher.. Lord Narasimha had to kill the asura with bare hands and hence the martial arts exponent here.. get it?
8. Rama avatar – Avatar Singh
Lord Rama stands for the one man one woman maxim, kind of symbolising true love.. Here Avatar portrays that spirit by saying that he loves his woman more than anything and wants to live for her.
9. Kalki avatar – Govindaraj Ramasamy
As you know, the hero in kaliyug can be none other than the Kalki avatar!!!
10. Koorma avatar – Bush
This is the most loose adaptation I couldn’t clearly comprehend. But if you look at the real koorma avatar, the lord is the turtle/tortoise that helps in stirring the ksheera sagara and bringing out the amruth. This essentially creates war among the devas and asuras. Similarly today Bush facilitates war between you know whom… May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise…

realy too intresting.I think you have done a research in this film.I am going to see desavatharam once more.
  2. Narasimhan said

This post is a hopeless one. Under the pretext of fun we cannot demean the Hindu religion in totality with a set of absurd statements made over the core faith that the 10 incarnations of Vishnu was/is/will be for the benefit of mankind.
    1. Krishna – was not a Dalit. He was born for Vasudeva a Kshatriya king (in-law of Kamsa). He was just grown by Yasoda / Nandagopa who belonged to Yadava family. Dark skinned does not mean dalit – this statement might offend the Dalit people too.
    2. Varaha avatar lord actually hides earth so as to protect life forms – This information is completely wrong. In Varaha avatar the lord does not hide earth, rather, He brings back the life for earthly creatures by restoring the structure of earth which was submerged under sea waters and set back its rotation. Vedic tradition still maintains that the present earth rotates with the force sustained by the initial spin spun by Sri SHWETHA Varaha and hence the present cycle of years and yugas i.e. the Kalpa is named as SHWETHA VARAHA Kalpa.
    3. Parasurama avatar – Hence the real KILLER…Again absurd. In every avatar the lord kills or destroys or weakens the evils directly or indirectly. Parasurama killed 21 generations of Kshatriyas who were bad but not all Kshatriyas in the world. Killer is a sick term to denote that. Otherwise, we should claim ourselves the killers as we kill tons of mosquitoes in our lifetime.
    4. … May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise… – Another absurd adjective before the tortoise – “dumb”. Even by mistake I would not want to readers to read that this tortoise would mean the Koormam. Who ever said Koorma avatar was dumb? Refer to the books for the detailed puranic events behind this avatar and its importance. One would end up his/her life just reading the book – it is so huge.
Keep a film, a film! Even for the sake of fun please do not correlate films with sensitive religious beliefs – or at the least don’t publish it to a mass.

    well said Narasimhan

hey..a flim is a flim and dasavatharam in a fantastic flim at that!
the flim makers of this flim have done tons of research for years and so much of it have been put into the storyline.
the most amazing thing of this flim is the irradical yet sensible combination of art, history, indian mythology centuries old, 3 different religions and scientific theories alltogether. THIS IS “THE” FLIM,PEOPLE!!!
WARNING: if you’re looking for the fight scene, rape scene, vivek or vadivelu comedy, hero kills villan..etc.. Don’t go to any Kamal Hassan movies. At All..
I would also humbly correct the corrections made by narasimhan here.
    1. Krishna – was not a Dalit.
yes of coz we all know that lord krishna was not a dalit. the character poovaragavan was said to be raised as such (pay attention to the dialogue of the flim), but lived a significant and truthful life.
    2. Varaha avatar –
you said it yourself, narasimhan. “restores structure and sets back the rotation”. yup. krishnaveni paati did just that. she plays the part to restore the circulation of the virus so it reaches Govindarajan. its like pushing back the moon that has moved slightly out of orbit.
    3. Parasurama avatar – Hence the real KILLER…Again absurd.
we are not calling lord parasurama a KILLER. thats exagarating. don’t take it literaly. cummon.. i think what sanker is tryin to get is the Fletcher is the character that went on a killing spree. Flecher killed whoever that that was against his mission. he does not differentiate good person or bad person. Fletcher was not the villian in the movie. he was just being loyal to the person above him. as lord parasuraman was. even after fighting for many generations, lord parasuraman was indestructable. just like our Flecther..the terminator man..
    4. May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise… – Another absurd adjective before the tortoise – “dumb”.
this i have to agree with narasimhan. kurman avatharam prevented the mountain Mandara from falling into the ocean so the the ocean could be churned by using the snake vasuki. but becouse of this, the deadly poison amruth managed to be churned out. im just guessing, but most probably the flims saying that eventhough bush thinks that he is being a big help to his country and the world by funding god knows what.. he is actualy contributing to absolute destruction.
seeing it the way i see the movie, it fully depends on the view of the person watching it.
and for people who have complained that there was to much of kamal hassan in the movie, FYI: i only noticed 1. the brilliant maestro at work.
    dig deep, u guyz…
  5. Prasanna said

    hi gud comments but
i dont understand y people r comparing all that with all avatars of teh hindu religion. i would say kamal wanted to do something different so he bet SIvaji’s nine characters by doin ten . and the major issue he had was to make a story for ten characters the constraints he had. so he has tried and accomplished his goal . good entertainer but pls do not compare any religion with that after all kamal says “anbe sivam” anytime u ask him. i also love that
  6. Shankar said

    Dear Sankar,
The article was worth reading and thats all. Unless, it is a deliberate leak from Kamalhasan’s camp justifying the
story and its absurdity.Long back in one of the interviews, kamalhasan himself said that, thre was a story in
explaining why the fire truck was painted Red.( maybe he himself read it somewhere).
Like that you can connect two odd things without any surmise.
I too happened to see the film but was not impressed at all.
There is a general impression among the film fraternity that Kamal is a Know it all genius and only one
of the tribe left.He is Intelligent and well informed. just that.
It is nice to see a person who will not settle for mediocrity and would pursue all avenues to reach perfection
or excel in the chosen field. But all this at whose cost?
I know there is large base of Kamal supporters who would diagree with my views, but this is not good film,
    leave alone a great film.
I only recollect a story which we all read in middle school about the emperor’s new robe (coat).
When all his subjects failed to mention that the king actaully was not wearing nothing at all, for fear of being
singled out, the entire film industry is standing mute spectator today.
Even films like Polladavan and Pori. which did not boast to be anything, nor had any pretensions whatsoever
    great was passable entertainer.
Today, not having a comedy track, double menaing entreaties, or 1: 10 muscle wrenching fights, alone cannot
    become un-conventional cinema.
If a person starts on a task of trying to reach the summit of Everest, his efforts can be follwed and can be
    lauded when he achieves it.
But if the same person wants to walk upto New Delhi from Chennai what record is he creating excepting endurance levels.
I am referring to the need for Kamal to assume the various roles, if he felt the characters were significant and
not the person hiding behinf the facade.Come on lets be honest, arent Nagesh, KR vijaye etal look so out of place.
This is anotherlack lustre film which created so much hoopla.
Unfortunately and ironically, Rajini gets away with these ( excepting Baba) and Kamal suffers at the box office.
As usual we shall grin and bear it.
  7. Sangeetha said

Another interpretation which i got from a friend is that
Vincent Poovarghan ( whose name sounds like bhoo varahan) is varaha avatar
Varaha avatar saved earth; poovarghan saves soil
And Krishnavatar is Krishnaveni paati.Apart form the name i don’t think theres anything in similar between the two.
One more interesting angle from which George bush’s character can be seen:
He is not the Koormavatar because he is dumb, as stated in an earlier post.
In Koormavatar, the tortoise enables the churning of the ocean expecting it to bring out nectar, which in turn brings out poison.
Similarly, Bush funds the research thinking it to be a boon, but what emerges is the bio-weapon.
Also, Shiva drinks the poison that came out of the ocean. And int he movie the monkey “Hanu” drinks it. I suppose mythology says that “Hanuman” is Shiva’s avatar.
Maybe Kamal wants to say that just like how the ocean gave our both nectar and poison, technology too can prove to be both useful and harmful.
