UPADESA SAHASRI | SEL001 | SRI ADI SANKARACARYA
30 Essential Upanisad & Gita Commentaries of Sankaracarya ,
" Selected " by Sankaracarya in UPADESA SAHASRI I.I.6-8
|| A METHOD OF ENLIGHTENING THE DISCIPLE || I.I.6 ||
6 . The teacher is one who is endowed with the power of furnishing arguments pro and con , of understanding questions ( put by the disciple ) and remembering them ( so as to answer ) , who possesses tranquillity , self-control , compassion and a desire to help others , who is versed ( through instructions traditionally handed down ) in the scriptures and unattached to enjoyments both seen ( ie , both here and hereafter ) and unseen , who has renounced the means to all kinds of actions , who is a KNOWER OF BRAHMAN AND IS ESTABLISHED IN IT , is never a transgressor of the rules of conduct , and who is devoid of shortcomings such as ostentation , pride , deceit , cunning , jugglery , jealousy , falsehood , egotism and attachment .
The teacher has the sole aim of helping others and a desire to impart the KNOWLEDGE OF BRAHMAN only .
One should first of all teach the Sruti texts establishing the oneness of the Self with BRAHMAN such as :
" My child , in the beginning it ( the Universe ) was Existence only , one alone without a second " ( 01 ) ,
" Where one sees nothing else " ( 02 ) ,
" All this is but the Self " ( 03 ) ,
" In the beginning all this was but the one Self " ( 04 ) ,
" All this is verily Brahman " ( 05 ) .

7-8 . After teaching these one should teach the definition of BRAHMAN through such Sruti texts as :
" The Self , devoid of sins " ( 06 ) ,
" The Brahman that is immediate and direct " ( 07 ) ,
" That which is beyond hunger and thirst " ( 08 ) ,
" Not-this , not-this " ( 09 ) ,
" Neither gross nor subtle " ( 10 ) ,
" This Self is not-this " ( 11 ) ,
" It is the Seer Itself unseen " ( 12 ) ,
" Knowledge-Bliss " ( 13 ) ,
" Existence-Knowledge-Infinite " ( 14 ) ,
" Imperceptible , bodiless " ( 15 ) ,
" That great unborn Self " ( 16 ) ,
" Without the vital force and the mind " ( 17 ) ,
" Unborn , comprising the interior and exterior " ( 18 ) ,
" Consisting of knowledge only " ( 19 ) ,
" Without interior or exterior " ( 20 ) ,
" It is verily beyond what is known as also what is unknown " ( 21 ) ,
" Called Akasha ( the self-effulgent One ) " ( 22 ) ,
And also through such Smriti texts , as the following :
" It is neither born nor dies " ( 23 ) ,
" It is not affected by anybody's sins " ( 24 ) ,
" Just as air is always in the ether " ( 25 ) ,
" The individual Self should be regarded as the Universal one " ( 26 ) ,
" It is called neither existent nor nonexistent " ( 27 ) ,
" As the Self is beginningless and devoid of qualities " ( 28 ) ,
" The same in all beings " ( 29 ) ,
" The Supreme Being is different " ( 30 ) ;
— all these support the definition given by the Srutis and prove that the innermost Self is beyond transmigratory existence and that it is not different from BRAHMAN , the all-comprehensive principle .
