Sanathana Dharma - Part 13 - Time

ஸ்ரீராமஜெயம் - ஸர்வம் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணார்ப்பணம்

In this post we shall deep dive on the concept of Time as per the vedas and Sanathana Dharma.

Vedic units of time

Note :
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_units_of_time for smaller time units less than a day
  • vayu purana
    • Yuga - http://www.gloriousindia.com/scriptures/puranas/vayu_purana/yugas.html
    • Kalpas -  http://www.gloriousindia.com/scriptures/puranas/vayu_purana/kalpas.html
    • Manvantras - http://www.gloriousindia.com/scriptures/puranas/vayu_purana/manvantaras.html

Time : Bottom up calculation

  • 1 Ahorātram  = 1 human day
  • 1 paksa = 15 human days
  • 1 masa = 2 Paksa = 30 days
  • 1 ritu = 2 masa
  • 1 ayana = 3 rutus = 6 months = 1 day time of deva = 1 night time of deva
  • 1 Samvatsara  = 1 human year = 2 ayanas  = 1 daytime of deva + 1 night time of deva
  • 1 human year  = 1 deva day
  • 1 deva year = 360 deva days = 360 human years
  • 1 Maha Yuga = 4 Yugas = 12000 deva years = 4,320,000 years
    • According to the information in the Laws of Manu, the morning and twilight periods between the dawn of each new era equals one-tenth of its associated yuga, as shown in the following table: Dawn  + Era +  Dusk =  Total. The Dawn and Dusk are referred as Yuga Sandhi or Yuga Sandhya
      • 4,000 + 400 + 400 = 4,800 divine years (= 1,728,000 human years) = 1 Satya Yuga or the golden Age
      • 3,000 + 300 + 300 = 3,600 divine years (= 1,296,000 human years) = 1 Tretā Yuga or the silver age
      • 2,000 + 200 + 200 = 2,400 divine years (= 864,000 human years) = 1 Dvāpara Yuga or the Bronze Age
      • 1,000 + 100 + 100 = 1,200 divine years (= 432,000 human years) = 1 Kali Yuga or the Iron Age
  • 1 Manvantara = 71.42 mahayugas  = 71.42 * 4,320,000 years = 308534400 years
  • 1 kalpa = 1 day time of brahma = 1000 Maha yugas = 4,320,000,000 years
    • 1 kalpa =  14 Manvantaras ruled by 14 Manu’s = 14 * 71.42 * 4,320,000 years = 4319481600 years ie. 4,320,000,000 years
  • 1 Kalpa = 1 night time of brahma = 1000 Maha yugas = 4,320,000,000 years
  • 1 Brahma day = 1 day time of brahma + 1 night time of brahma   = 2 Kalpas = 2 * 4,320,000,000 years = 8640000000 years = 8.64 billion years
  • Naimithika Pralayam happens at the end of 1 kalpa = 1 day time of Brahma.
    • At the end of 1 Kalpa i.e. 1 day time of brahma Naimithika Pralayam happens where 3 loka’s Bhur, Bhuvaha, Suvar get destroyed. Brahma sleeps throughout his night which is again equivalent to 1 day time of brahma. Thereafter, there is creation once again of the 3 loka’s by brahma. Note that in this pralayam there is no impact to Moola prakruthi, mahan, ahankaram unlike prakrutha pralayam.
  • 1 Brahma year = 360 Brahma day = 360 * 8640000000 years  = 3110400000000 years
  • 1 parardha =  50 Brahma years
  • Lifespan of Brahma = 100 Brahma year = 2 Parardha =  2*50 * 1 Brahma year = 100 * 3110400000000 years = 311040000000000 years = = 311 trillion years
  • 1 Para = 1 Maha Kalpa = Lifespan of Brahma
  • Prakrutha Pralayam happens at the end of 1 Maha Kalpa i.e lifespan of Brahma = 100 brahma years
    • Prakrutha Pralayam occurs when all worlds are destroyed and all jeevatmas rest in a state of inactivity by Perumal. Perumal lies down in Yoga nidra for a very long time and starts creation again upon waking up . After 100 days of brahma this pralayam happens when all the 14 loka’s including brahma are destroyed and only Srivaikuntam exists. Lord keeps us safe in His belly even during pralayam and lets us out once creation begins.

Time : Top down calculation

  • 1 Para =  1 Maha-Kalpa = Lifespan of Brahma = 100 years of Brahma
  • Brahmas lifetime = 100 Brahma year = 2 Parardha =  2*50 * 1 Brahma year = 100 * 3110400000000 years = 311040000000000 years = = 311 trillion years
    • 1 parardha =  50 Brahma years
    • 1 Brahma year = 360 Brahma day = 360 * 8640000000 years  = 3110400000000 years
      • 1 Brahma day = 1 day(kalpa) + 1 night  = 2 * 4,320,000,000 years = 8640000000 years = 8.64 billion years
        • 1 Kalpa i.e. 1 day time of brahma calculation: 1 Kalpa = 4,320,000,000 years
          • 1 kalpa = 1 day of brahma = 1000 MahaYugas = 1000 * 4,320,000 years = 4,320,000,000 years.
            • 1 Mahayuga = Sum of 4 Yugas (Krita, Treta, Dwapara and Kali) = 4,320,000 years
          • 1 kalpa = 1 day of brahma = 1000 Mahayugas = 14 Manvantaras = 14 * 71.42 mahayugas = 14 * 71.42 * 4,320,000 years = 4319481600 years ie. 4,320,000,000 years.
            • 1 kalpa =  14 Manvantaras ruled by 14 Manu’s
            • 1 Manvantara = 71.42 mahayugas  = 71.42 * 4,320,000 years = 308534400 years
            • 1 Mahayuga = Sum of 4 Yugas (Krita, Treta, Dwapara and Kali) = 4,320,000 years
        • Maha Yuga calculation: 1 Mahayuga = 4,320,000 years
          • Sum of 4 Yugas = 4,320,000 years = 10 * 432000 years
            • Krita/satya  = 4*432000 years = 1728000 years
            • Treta = 3*432000 years = 1296000 years
            • Dwapara = 2*432000 years = 864000 years
            • Kali = 1*432000 years= 432000 years
          • Sum of 4 Yugas = 4,320,000 years = 12000 deva years = 12000 * 360 years = 4,320,000 years
            • 1 deva year = 360 years
            • Krita/satya  =  4800 deva years = 4800 * 360 years = 1728000 years
            • Treta = 3600 deva years = 3600 * 360 years = 1296000 years
            • Dwapara = 2400 deva years =  2400 *360  years = 864000 years
            • Kali = 1200 deva years =  1200 * 360 years= 432000 years
