NationalityIndian
Snehan (born Sivaselvam on 23 June 1978) is an Indian poet, lyricist and actor who has worked in the Tamil film industry. After serving as an assistant to poet Vairamuthu, he began working as a lyricist in the film Putham Pudhiya Poove and has written lyrics for more than 2500 songs. Snehan has since also appeared in films as an actor and made his acting debut with Yogi (2009).[1]

Career

Snehan was born in a small village Pudhukariyapatti, near Sengipatti in the Thanjavur district as Sivaselvam, the youngest of eight sons into an agricultural family.[2] He later changed his name to Snehan because, which translates literally to "the man of love", as he felt Sivaselvam was too common.[3] Moving to Chennai, Snehan first worked as a protégé to noted poet and lyricist Vairamuthu for five years. Later, he worked as the editor of Ilanthendral, a monthly magazine for three years. At the book release function of his works Mudhal Adhyayam and Innum Pengal Azhaga Irukkirargal in 1995, he was asked by K. Balachander to write songs in films and he got the chance from music director S. A. Rajkumar to write lyrics for the film Putham Puthu Poove, which eventually did not have a theatrical release. He has since written more than 2500 songs for more than 500 films, working with various directors and music composers in the Tamil film industry.[2] He first garnered acclaim for his songs in the art film Penngal (2000) and the dubbed film Kandein Seethaiyai (2001), before making a breakthrough with his song "Avaravar Vazhkaiyil" from Cheran's family drama Pandavar Bhoomi (2001). Other successful early songs written by Snehan were from the album Dhaya and the dance number "Chumma Chumma" in Charlie Chaplin (2002) which was picturised on Prabhu Deva and Gayathri Raghuram.[2] He received further acclaim in the early 2000s with his collaboration with Ameer and Yuvan Shankar Raja in Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002) and then for the "Kalyanamdhaan Kattikittu" song in Harris Jayaraj's album Saamy (2003).[2] His work in Ameer's Raam (2005) also won critical acclaim, with the song "Aarariro" earning him plaudits.[3] He later released more books including Ippadium Irukkalam and Puthagam.[3]
He then turned actor for the film action drama Yogi, for which he has also written all the lyrics, as his friend and lead actor of the film, Ameer Sultan, gave him the opportunity. For the same film, Snehan became a playback singer as well, lending his vocals to a song. Portraying a rustic character named Sadayan, the character was well received by audiences.[4] Following his appearance in Yogi, Snehan chose to pursue a career as an actor and looked for roles where he would play the protagonist.[5] In order to prepare for his stint as an actor, he trained under stunt choreographer Power Pandian to practise action scenes and learnt salsa dancing.[6] His next release, the crime thriller Uyarthiru 420 (2011), saw him appear in the lead role opposite Meghana Raj but the film fared poorly at the box office and received negative reviews. In regard to his performance, a critic from Sify.com wrote "the chemistry between the lead pair is zero" and "though Snehan attempts and succeeds to be stylish in the songs, his wooden face, long hair, patchy makeup and dark glasses in almost every frame is a big let down".[7][8]
In 2013, Snehan began working on a historical film titled Raja Raja Chozhanin Porval directed by R. S. Amudheswar, which would feature music by Ilaiyaraaja. The team began shoot in mid-2013 and brought in actresses Shriya SaranSneha and newcomer Naatiya to play leading female roles opposite Snehan. However, the film was subsequently shelved after it ran into financial trouble.[9] In 2015, he then started work on a film titled Bommi Veeran directed by Ramesh Maharajan, where he would portray a kattaikkuttu dancer. Like his previous film, the film ran intro financial trouble and the shoot remains on hold.[10]
In 2017, Snehan took part in the Tamil reality television show Bigg Boss hosted by Kamal Haasan.[11]

Personal life

Controversy

In 2005, Snehan was highly critical of female lyricists such as Kutti Revathi, Sukirtarani, Salma, Malathi Maithri and Uma Maheswari for writing about their bodies and sexuality and called for the poets to be "burnt".[12]
In 2011, Snehan had a police complaint filed against him and faced court action following allegations that he had broken the marriage of Prabhakaran and Jamuna, who had worked as the choreographer in Uyarthiru 420 (2011). Prabhakaran accused Snehan of cheating with his wife and abducting their child.[13]

Ganesh began his acting career by appearing in television serials including Antariksh and Mayavi, which was first 3D serial in Tamil television. He made his film début with The Angrez (2006), an experimental crossover film shot in Hyderabadi Urdu but could not garner any further film offers immediately. Subsequently, he made his début in Tamil cinema with Radha Mohan's family drama, Abhiyum Naanum (2008). Ganesh successfully auditioned for the role in Mumbai, by turning up dressed as the Sikh character in the film, prompting the makers to believe that he actually was a Punjabi. Portraying as Trisha's Punjabi fiancé, his role received critical acclaim and the film performed well at the box office. After working with Prakash Raj in his second film, Ganesh got several further offers to appear in supporting roles in films starring veteran actors. He appeared as a police officer, working alongside Kamal HaasanMohanlal and Venkatesh in the bilingual film Unnaipol Oruvan (2009, while he then portrayed an army general in Major Ravi's war film Kandahar, where he appeared with Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan. He also shot and completed a thriller film titled Muriyadi with Sathyaraj by Selva, but the film failed to have a theatrical release owing to Kavithalayaa Productions' financial troubles. During the period, Ganesh also opted out of another multi-starrer Mankatha (2011), and instead chose to work on another bilingual Tamil and Hindi film, Panithuli (2012), in a solo lead role. Shot entirely in the USA, the film opened to negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office.[2] Furthermore, he appeared with another veteran actor, Nagarjuna, during the making of Damarukam (2012), which became his first straight Telugu film.[3]
Ganesh worked on three projects in 2013, prioritising his work on Tamil cinema. He appeared in Sundar C's bilingual film, Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru in a supporting role of an office worker, while he was seen as a police officer in the action film, Ivan Veramathiri. He also portrayed the role of a prince in Roopa Iyer's Kannada and Tamil bilingual film, Chandra, and revealed that he signed on after hearing that Shriya Saran would be portraying the lead role.[4] Ganesh subsequently worked on a few low budget films, the psychological thriller Achaaram (2015) and the drama Pallikoodam Pogamale (2015), both of which had low key theatrical releases. During the same year, he also portrayed a supporting role in Mohan Raja's Thani Oruvan (2015), which went on to become a blockbuster at the box office.[5] His following his releases have fared less well with Thodari (2016) and Nayaki (2016), where he portrayed the antagonist, earning negative reviews and performing poorly at the box office.[6][7] Likewise, neither of his subsequent investigative thriller films Inayathalam (2017) or 7 Naatkal (2017) were able to perform well commercially.[8] For his role in Inayathalam, Ganesh spent time with the Chennai cyber-crime division to prepare for his character.[9]
Ganesh will next be seen in a supporting role in Vanangamudi (2017) as a police officer alongside Aravind Swamy. His long-delayed Hindi film, Guns of Benaras, where he stars alongside Vinod Khanna, is also expected to have a theatrical release in late 2017.[10][11]

Harish Kalyan (born 29 June 1990) is an Indian film actor who has predominantly appeared in Tamil language films. He made his acting debut in Sindhu Samaveli (2010) opposite debutante Amala Paul, before being noticed for his performances in Poriyaalan (2014) and Vil Ambu (2016).[

Career

Films

Harish Kalyan made his debut in Samy's controversial Sindhu Samaveli (2010), portraying the role of Anbu, whose wife has an illicit relationship with her father-in-law. Upon release, the film met with contrasting reviews, whilst some critics refused to give the film a rating, declaring their disgust at the film's plot.[2][3] Critics described his next role in the Thaman-musical Aridhu Aridhu (2010) as "okay", but the film also failed to take a strong opening at the box office.[4] Harish then went on to work in S. A. Chandrasekhar's Sattapadi Kutram (2011), which featured SathyarajVikranth and Bhanu in other roles. The film showcased the changes our legal system demands, with Harish playing a spoilt brat who eventually turns over a new leaf in the film. The film opened to poor reviews and did poorly at the box office.[5] He was next seen alongside KarunasShweta Basu Prasad and Sanjana Singh in the 2013 comedy film Chandhamama, before playing a supporting role in the Telugu film, Jai Sriram (2013).[6][7] During the period, he also worked on a bilingual film titled Guest opposite Poonam Kaur, but the film did not have a theatrical release.[8][9][10]
After half a dozen films, he was finally noticed for his performance in the thriller Poriyaalan (2014), where he portrayed a young architect caught up in a real estate scam. Produced by Vetrimaaran and featuring him alongside AnandhiPoriyaalan became Harish's first successful venture with critics praising his performance.[11][12] The success of Poriyaalan prompted film maker Suseenthiran to select Harish to portray a leading role in his production, Vil Ambu (2016).[13] Appearing in an ensemble cast including his own father Kalyan, Sri and Chandini Tamilarasan, critics praised Harish's performance stating he "scores big time" and "is bound to be noticed for his charming looks and clean features".[14][15] Despite winning positive reviews, the film did middling business at the box office.[16][17] In 2017, Harish appeared in another Telugu film, the romantic comedy Kaadhali, where he featured alongside Sai Ronak and Pooja Doshi.[18][19]

Other

Harish Kalyan is a trained singer in Hindustani music and can also play the keyboard.[20] During January 2012, he announced his intentions of releasing two songs he had worked on titled "Kutty Peg – A Toast to Life" and "Ovvoru Manushanuukum Ovvoru Feelings". In 2016, Harish released an independent song titled "I'm Single", working as a singer and lyricist for the song, which had music composed by L. V. Muthukumarasamy.[21][22]
In 2017, Harish took part in the first season of the Tamil reality television show, Bigg Boss hosted by Kamal Haasan. He entered the show on day 53 as a new contestant.[23]
