Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritya – Fraud in the name of Muhurta

Akshaya Tritiya/ अक्षय तृतीया (Literal meaning never ending third day) falls on the third Tithi (Lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the Vaishakha/ वैशाख month of Indian calendar.
This year it is falling on May 13, 2013 (Monday). As per ancient scriptures, Akshaya Tritiya combined with Monday is considered very auspicious.
Initially this festival was earmarked for doing charity, donation and welfare activities. I can still remember my family donating fans and earthen pitchers to the poor people, in my children days. Probably these were highly appropriate in those days, when electricity was yet to reach non metro areas of the country.
In the recent years, it has turned into Gold shopping day, due to marketing gimmick of jewellers. This phenomenon was unheard ten to twenty years back. It is being publicized that if you buy anything valuable on this day, it will remain with you perpetually and will become manifold.
Along with this, another practice has also started to do anything auspicious like starting any new venture, performing marriages and all type of festivities on this day, considering this day very auspicious. Not only common man, but even half baked astrologers have started suggesting that for doing anything auspicious on this day, you need not to check ‘Muhurta’. So we are witnessing mass marriages along with mass hysteria for gold shopping.
Nothing can be far from truth. Actually this is nothing but a fraudulent exercise by the market forces.
Just see what opinion of scriptures about Akshaya Tritiya is?
Muhurta Chintamani’ (मुहुर्त चिंतामणि) most famous Classic about the science of Muhurta (Electional Astrology) says in the verse 57 of shubhashubh prakarana/ शुभाशुभ प्रकरण  (Chapter of auspicious and inauspicious) that third tithi of bright half of Vaishakh i,e. Akshaya Tritiya is Yugadi tithi, hence one should not perform anything auspicious.
The view expressed by ‘Muhurta Chintamani’ is echoed by all the ancient books on Muhurta. So, all these publicity is marketing gimmick and nothing else. If books of astrology and religion are to be believed, all these activities are going to make harm, instead of doing anything good to performers.
Then how all this started?
Regarding Akshaya Tritiya, it has been written in the great epic ‘Mahabharata’ that you get infinite gains of ritual bathing (Snaana/ स्नान), sacrifices (Havan/ हवन), oblations to sacred fire (Homa/ होम ), donations (Dana/ दान ) and recitation of Mantra (Japa/ जप), performed on this day.
In the same spirit, Bhavishya Purana/ भविष्य पुराण says that even if you donate either a very meagre quantity or a large quantity on this day, you get infinite results due to that.
So, what was intended by religious books that if you do charity, donation and other religious activities on this day, the Punyam (beneficial effect) of these activities will never wane. Now, it is being interpreted in a very materialistic way that if you buy anything valuable like gold on this way, it will never finish.
As already discussed earlier, astrological books prohibit celebrations on this day.
In view of the opinion on the basis of Shastras elaborated above, we atAstroDevam.com suggest to refrain from all the activities, except those religious in nature.
Although, many persons like to start new ventures, business, construction, solemnise marriage on this day; experienced astrologers like AstroDevam.com warn against this practice of blindly following this tradition and advise to take care of other canons of ‘Electional Astrology’.
