  Temple History:

During their life in the jungles, Pandavas the five brothers during their journey in south found this place, an embodiment of nature’s beauty with divine peace spread everywhere.  They decided to stay there for a while.  They built temples and installed idols for their pujas and worship.  Arjuna installed the idol of Lord Vishnu.  This is considered as the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.  Other idols of Lord Vishnu installed by Darma, Beema, Nakula and Sahadeva are in separate shrines in the prakara-corridor.  There also shrines for Lord Sastha, Nagar and Mother Bhagavati.  Lord Ganapathy and Lord Dakshinamurthy grace the devotees at the entrance of the temple.

It is said that Pandavas spent a longer period of their forest life in this place.  After a long time, a Pandya king built the compound wall.

About 2000 years back, a sage of this place went to Kasi and stayed there for a long time.  He came to know that his mother was terminally ill and started to see his mother.  Lord Kasi Viswanatha also accompanied him hiding himself in the umbrella of the sage.

Reaching this place, the sage left the umbrella and went for a bath.  Returning, he saw the umbrella disappearing and the stone blasted and a Shivalinga in the place.  It is believed that Lord Kasi Viswanatha with all His grace came to this place to stay here installed by Pandavas through the sage.

The first worship goes to Lord Shiva before approaching Lord Vishnu in the temple.  People of Kerala respect this place as a place with five Murthys.

 Greatness Of Temple:

The temple is situated on the banks of famous Bharatapuzha River in Kerala.  According to evidences available, the place was a centre of learning.  As the sacred text Sri Sukthi came into being in this place, this was a pleasant centre of research for the scholars.

During his exile, when Sri Rama was staying in Chitrakuda in the forest, Bharatha came there to take Sri Rama to Ayodhya back.  Lakshmana misunderstood Bharata’s visit to the place and was ready to kill him.  Lakshmana realized his mistake and sought the pardon of Perumal in the temple.  Bharata came in, embraced his brother and spoke softly to him.  Hence the name of the place, Tirumozhikalam – place of auspicious and soft words.

  Temple History:

Lord Krishna was performing his pujas in Dwaraka with four idols of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrugana.  After Dwaraka was drowned in floods later, Sage Vakelwa got these idols.  Lord appearing in his dream, asked the Rishi o install them in places on the banks of Bharatapuzha River.  Accordingly, Rama was installed in Tiruparayar in Trissur district, Bharata in Irugnalakuda, Satrugna in Payamal and Lakshmana as Lakshmana Perumal in Tirumoozhikalam.  This is the only Vishnu temple named after Lakshmana.

According to other story, Haridha Maharshi performed penance on Lord Vishnu here.  Pleased with his penance, Lord appeared before and offered his wish.  The Rishi asked the Lord to tell people an easy way to reach Him.  Lord, in his reply said that every one should practice the trade assigned to them according to Varnasrama Dharmas and offered the Sri Sukthi text explaining the puja rules.  This event also is attributed to the name Tirumozhikalam (place of sacred, soft and auspicious words) which later changed as Tirumoozhikalam.

 Temple's Speciality:

There is no admission to women in this temple as in Aiyappan temple as Lord observes Brammacharya (celibacy) here. The temple has the reputation of being among the 108 Vaishnavite Divya Desas. As the Chest Darshan of Lord is considered very important on Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January and on Chithirai Vishu the first day of the month falling almost on April 14 or a day before or after occasionally in some years, women are admitted to the temple on these days only. It is said that Perumal also as a Brahmmachari stood in the queue to receive the dhan (alms) from Sankara Mangalathu Ammayar. Perumal also asked Ammayar the salted mango she kept to take after completing her fast. She immediately offered it to Perumal in the arecanut leaf. Hence, rice and salted mango on this leaf is offered to Perumal as nivedhana. Sandal Prasad is very famous in Kerala. In this temple, vibhuti-the sacred ash is also offered as Prasad with sandal paste, based on the story that Lord Shiva came to the temple to worship Perumal on the Tiruvadhirai day. We see Garuda Bhagwan in Vishnu temple standing in a worshipping form opposite the Lord.  Here, He is 50 feet tall on a pillar in a flying form covered with gold.  The philosophy is that Sri Garuda Bagwan is ready to carry the Lord to the devotee who prays to him submitting his grievances.  Perumal is facing east in a standing form.  The Vimana – tower above the sanctum sanctorum is called Chaturanga Kola Vimanam.  Kandakarnan and Sankaramangala Ammayar had worshipped here.

  Temple History:

A holy woman respected for her Pathi Bhakti was living in Sankaramangalam village.  She was observing the Ekadasi fasting intensely and used to visit the temple on Dwadasi-next day and was feeding the ascetics in the temple.  A demon, Tolakasuran by name was giving her troubles on her way to the temple.  Ammayar prayed to Perumal for protection.

Once, while she was coming to the temple through the forest area, she saw a Brahmmachari fighting ferociously.  The sound of the fight stopped after a while.  Ammayar reached the temple and saw a Brahmmachari youth resembling the one she saw in the forest and understood that Lord Himself came to protect her.

Brahmmacharis do not wear the upper cloth-Angavastram.  There is no angavastram for Perumal in the temple.  While we see seek the feet of Perumal for darshan, here devotees seek the chest darshan of Perumal, the abode of Sri Mahalakshmi (Tiru).  Hence, Perumal is called Tiru Vazh Marban – Lakshmi residing in the chest of Perumal.

Devotee crowd will be huge this day. The festival is attributed to the story that Lord Shiva was here in the form of a fire ball threatening to burn the whole region. Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahmma appealed to Lord Shiva to cool down. Responding to their prayer, Shiva reduced the form into into a small deep (lamp) and saved the region on a Tirukarthikai day. Other festivals celebrated in the temple are Gokhulashtami in Aavani month (August-September) and days related to Vishnu worship.

There are idols of Lords Sastha, Muruga and serpent deities around the prakara.  It is said that the tall compound wall of the temple was built by Bhoodas described as colossal creatures with huge body and extraordinary strength with a threatening appearance.  The word fiend may not be correct English version as Bhoodas are generally shown as a helping group to Gods in our scriptures. There is a human body placed on a stone in front of the temple.  The story goes that the king of the region came to the temple for darshan but found the doors closed.  But the security received a bribe from the king and opened the doors.  As a punishment, his body is placed on a stone, it is said.

In a single sanctum sanctorum circular in shape, Lord Arputha Narayana is facing east and Lord Narasimha is facing west.  Therefore, there are two flag post individually for both Perumals.  It is said Lord Narasimha was installed in later days.  On the south side of the sanctum Lord Dakshinamurthy and Lord Vinayaka grace facing south.  There are no doors for their shrines.  Holes are provided on a wooden plank to see the deities and have the darshan.

With a view to reduce the ferocity of Lord Narasimha, sweet porridge is offered as nivedhana.  During pujas to Narasimha, Srimad Narayaneeyam, authored by great Vishnu-Guruvayurappan devotee Narayana Pattadri is recited in the temple. The Vimana (tower above the sanctum) is called Punniyakodi Vimana.  Rukmangathan and Devas had come to this temple to submit their prayers to Perumal facing east.

  Temple History:

The region was under the rule of one Rukmangathan.  Flowers of many varieties grew in his garden.  Devas picked these flowers and offered it to Perumal.  He came to know that the flowers are stolen from the garden.  He ordered that these thieves should be arrested and brought before him.  His men, not knowing that the flower pickers were Devas, caught them and produced before the king.  Knowing the truth, the king apologized to them and released them immediately.  Yet, as they were arrested by humans, Devas lost the power of returning back to their place.  When the king asked them what he could do to help them, they told him that if he parted with the benefits of his Ekadasi fasting of years, they would regain the power to go back.  The king happily agreed, took them to the Perumal temple and donated the huge benefits he had accrued through years.  All these happened within a fraction of second (kadigai), hence the name of the place Tirukadithanam.

It is said that Sahadevan, the last brother of the Pandavas installed Perumal in this place.  He was searching for an idol but could not succeed.  Out of frustration, he decided to immolate himself.  An idol of Lord Narayana appeared instantly before Sahadeva and saved from his self-sacrifice.  Hence, the Lord is named Arputha Narayana (Arputha-miracle). The temple is popularly known as Sahadevan Temple.

It was an embarrassing situation for Dharma the eldest of Pandava brothers in the Kurukshetra battle field.  Unless Dronacharya the Guru of Dharma was killed, Pandavas cannot win.  Drona was very fond of his son Aswathama and he could not bear his loss in the battle field.  It was decided to make Drona believe that Aswathama was killed in the field.  Dharma had to do this job.  He knows it was sin to speak a lie of this kind.  But there was no option left if he has to win the war.  He told Drona that an elephant also named Aswathama was killed but toned down his voice while telling the word elephant and raised the voice while telling the name of Aswathama.  Drona could not bear the news and stopped fighting.  He was instantly killed by Dhrushtadyumna against the Yuddha Darma.

Yet, Darma could not excuse himself for the deed.  After war ended, he came to this place, performed penance for peace and cleansing.  It is said that Darma renovated this temple.  Even before Darma’s coming to this place, Imayavars (Devas) came to this place and performed penance on Lord Vishnu.  Lord granted them Darshan and was celebrated as Imayavar Appan – Lord of Devas.

In days of yore, the region was under the rule of one Vrushadharbi, son of Emperor Shibi.  He was suffering from a severe disease due to some curse.  His kingdom also came under severe drought and famine.  During this crucial time, Saptha Rishis paid a visit to the place and called on the king.  He told the Rishis that he would offer them Dhan (donation) only if they help eliminating the dangers before the kingdom and himself personally. The Rishis grew furious and told the king that they would be committing a sin if they received alms from him and went away.  Yet, the king sent gold and fruits through his ministers to them which they refused to accept.  The angry king organized a yajna and sent an evil angel to kill the Rishis.  They prayed to Perumal for protection.  Lord sent Indira in the form of tiger (Puli in Tamil) and killed the evil spirit.  The place is named Tirupuliyur after this event.  Rishis said that Perumal alone is real and everything else in the world is but illusion – Maya.  Lord thus came to be known as Mayapiran.

Lord Tirukuralappan graces in a standing form facing east.  The vimana-tower above the sanctum sanctorum- is called Vamana Vimanam.  Sage Veda Vyasa and Lord Brahmma had the darshan of the Lord.  Once, two demons Madhu and Kaidaba snatched the Vedas from Brahmma who sought the grace of Lord Perumal to recover them.  Perumal destroyed the demons and recovered the Vedas.  Brahmma performed penance here on Perumal as a token of his gratitude to Lord.

It is here Arjuna hid his weapons in the Vanni tree during Pandava’s life incognito.  The nuts falling from this Vanni tree is heaped around the flag post of the temple and sold to devotees.

  Temple History:

During the 18 day Kurukshetra Bharata battle, the wheel of Karna’s chariot was stuck in the ground.  While Karna was engaged to lift the wheel leaving his weapons in the chariot, Arjuna took the opportunity and killed him.  Though Arjuna acted successfully, the guilt of killing one when unarmed troubled his mind and he could not excuse himself.  What more troubled him was the thought that he, noted for his law abiding nature should not have committed a disgraceful sin.

Every Pandava established a temple during their journey in Kerala.  Arjuna established this temple, performed penance on Perumal and was rewarded with the Darshan of Lord in the form of Parthasarathy.  It is here he hid his weapons in the Vanni tree, according to scriptures.  Arjuna thus got himself cleansed of his sins with the grace of Lord Perumal.

  Temple History:

An ascetic Vilwamangalam Swamigal was performing pujas to Lord Narayana each day with flowers etc.  A little boy was causing all troubles to Swamigal by scattering the puja materials and even urinating nearby.  It is said that Lord played in the guise of the little boy to test the tolerance level of Swamigal.  When his mischief reached a stage, Swamigal pushed the boy Unni Kannan-little boy in anger.  Lord Kannan appeared before him and said that true bhakti and renunciation required total tolerance and that He so behaved to test him.  He also told the Swamigal that if he desired to see him again, he (swamigal) had to come to Ananthan Kadu.  Lord disappeared then.

Swamigal began to discover Ananthan Kadu but could not.  He sat under a tree much tired on a scorching sunny day.  He saw a peasant couple nearby quarrelling.
The husband shouted that if she was behaving like that, he would kill her and throw her in the Ananthan Kadu.  Swamigal was happy, approached the husband, made peace among them and asked him to show the place.  The husband showed Swamigal Ananthan Kadu.  It was a rough path covered by wild bushes with thorns. Determined, Swamigal found at last Lord with Sridevi and Bhoodevi on Adiseha in the reclining posture and worshipped Him.  Lord further tested the Swamigal to get Him something to eat as He was hungry.  Swamigal gave him unriped mango found in the jungle with salt.  Swamigal informed the king of Travancore about his finding.  The king took Brahmin priests from eight mutts and reached the place.  Though Lord was not there as described by the Swamigal, the king in good faith, built a temple, installed Lord on Adisesha and named Him Anantha Padmanabha Swami.

  Temple History:

Due to an error in the conduct of a yajna by Lord Brahmma, two demons appeared from the fire – Kesan and Kesi.  They caused all troubles to Sages and Devas.  They came to Lord Vishnu for protection.  Lord killed Kesan and used Kesi as a pillow for his bed.  The demon’s wife, to avenge the Lord, called Rivers Ganga and Tambiraparani to help her.  They came in spate to wash off the Lord.  Mother Earth simply raised the ground level where Perumal was reclining.  Both Rivers went round the Lord, prayed to Him and continued to flow round as two garlands.  This event is mentioned in Nammalvar’s Mangalasasanam hymn.

As Perumal destroyed demon Kesan, He is named Kesava Perumal.  Kesi tried his best to escape from the Lord with his 12 hands.  Lord put 12 Rudrakshas in his hand and foiled his escape bid.  12 Shiva temples came into being through these Rudrakshas around Tiruvattaru.  During Shivrathri, devotees run to cover all the 12 Siva temples and end the prayer with Lord Shiva at the feet of Adikesava Perumal.  The practice continues even today.

 Greatness Of Temple:

There lived one Nambaduvan, belonging to a backward community at the foot of Mahendragiri hills, was a staunch Vishnu devotee.  He was sad that he could not have the darshan of the Lord Azhagia Nambi even from outside the temple as the flag post-Kodimaram was shielding the sanctum sanctorum.  To oblige Nambaduvan, Lord asked the flag post to move a little to enable the devotee to have His darshan.  We see the flag post in the temple slightly moved to a side.
The temple also houses the shrines of Lord Shiva and Lord Bhairava as a symbol of Saiva-Vaishnava harmony.  When pujas are performed to Lord Nambi, to ascertain whether pujas are performed to Lord Shiva also, a priest nearby would ask “ anything short for Lord’s beloved friend”.  The other one will reply “nothing”.  This is in vogue even today.
Lord Nambi is praised in the Mangalasasanam hymns of Nammazhwar, Tirumazhisai Azhwar, Tirumangai Azhwar and Periazhwar.  Periazhwar was no less an avatar of Lord Nambi Himself.  Thirumangai Azhwar was directed by Srirangam Lord Ranganatha to go to Tirukurungudi where Nambi would grant him salvation he wished.  Lord Nambi graces in four forms, standing, sitting, reclining and walking.
Kurangam in Tamil means Mother Earth-Bhoomadevi.  As Mother prayed here on Perumal, the place is also known as Kuranga Kshetram.
Lord Vishnu condensed (Kurukuthal in Tamil) his huge Varaha Avatara form here situated on the banks of Nambi River while with Mother Mahalalakshmi, the place is named Kurungudi.   When He took the Vamana (Dwarf) Avatar and then grew touching the sky, the spring that came out of his anklet is named Silambaru, Silambu-anklet, according to ancient scriptures

  Temple History:

Earth was retrieved by Lord Vishnu with His Varaha Avtar when demon Hiranyaksaha tried to take it away.  Mother Earth sought the guidance of Lord Varaha to reach him.  Lord said that he could be reached through music.  A problem arose between a man of backward community and a ghost.  When the ghost tried to devour the man, he promised the ghost to come back to it after singing the praise of Lord as it was a sacred Kaisika Ekadasi day.  The man attained salvation that day as he sang the praise of Lord and ghost too attained salvation as it heard the man singing the praise of Lord.

 Greatness Of Temple:

The place came to be known as Naguneri meaning surrounded by four lakes.  This is one of the 108 Divya Desas of Perumal.  This is the only temple where Perumal graces with His royal attire in Durbar with Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi.   One of Lord’s hands point to His feet and the other on His lap as an assurance that the devotee surrendering at His feet will have a place on His lap.  Perumal also holds the Prayoga Chakra.  Those worshipping the Chakra will have no enemies at all in life.

It is said that the procession idol of Mother was originally in Tirupathi.  Devotees in Tirupati were to offer Varamangadevi to Sri Venkateswara in Tirupati.  Perumal appeared in the dream of Jeer Swamigal and said that Varamangadevi was meant to Lord Vanamamalai in Nanguneri, therefore taken to this place.  The headquarters of Vanamamalai Jeer, one among the Ashtathik Gajas – Eight pontiffs of Vaishnava order – by saint Manavala Mamunigal is here.  The Sadari placed on the devotees as blessing of Lord, has the image of Nammazhwar-Sadagopan.

  Temple History:

When Lord Vishnu destroyed the demons, Madhu and Kaidaba, the bad odour from their body spread polluting the whole earth.  Mother Earth lost Her natural purity.  She came to this place for cleansing.  Lord appeared before Bhoomadevi (Earth) and said, “pollution set on you is washed off” according to history of the place-sthala purana.

Special Features:

Miracle Based: Thothadri Nathan Describing the glory of the Lord, Saint Nammazhwar begs Him to appear before him to worship Him with full satisfaction.
